Amos Oz, celebrated Israeli author, wrote over 30 novels and short stories, widely translated from the Hebrew, poignant expressions of the human condition. He was an ardent advocate for peace, who wrote passionately on the scourge of extremism. Oz famously said, ‘We can fold all the moral imperatives, the Ten Commandments, and the human virtues, into a single commandment: Thou shalt not inflict pain. That is all. Do not hurt.’ His daughter Fania Oz-Salzberger, joined by his translator Nicholas de Lange, Simon Schama and Jonathan Freedland, discuss his life, legacy and inestimable contribution to international culture.

Fania Oz-Salzberger is an Israeli writer, history professor and public intellectual. She is Professor Emerita at the University of Haifa Law School.

He has written and presented over 50 films for the BBC on subjects as diverse as Tolstoy and American politics, and he co-presented the landmark series on the history of world art, Civilisations. Nicholas de Lange has written widely about Judaism and about Jewish history, specialising in Greek-speaking Judaism. His latest book is The Jews of Byzantium. He is the Visiting Rabbi of the Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Haniá, Crete.
