Journey from Odesa to America and Britain, from biblical times to what it means to be Jewish today, in the company of leading poets. Transatlantic poet and academic Eve Grubin is joined by Ukrainian-American writer Ilya Kaminsky, recently selected by the BBC as ‘one of 12 artists that changed the world’; award-winning poet and playwright Jacqueline Saphra and Jessica Jacobs author of unalone, poems in conversation with the Book of Genesis. With interludes of Ladino, Israeli and European Jewish music featuring renowned soprano Sarit Aloni.

About the speakers

Sarit Aloni

Sarit Aloni is an internationally renowned soprano who has performed in Israel, Italy, Germany, Canada and the UK. She has founded and directed several choirs, including the Anashim Choir in Sardinia, Italy and the International Choir in Vancouver, Canada. She is also a composer whose work has been broadcast on BBC Radio. 

Jessica Jacobs

Jessica Jacobs’ third collection unalone, poems in conversation with the Book of Genesis, was published in 2024 by Four Way Books. Winner of the New Mexico Book Award and finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, Jessica is the founder and executive director of Yetzirah: A Hearth for Jewish Poetry.

Jacqueline Saphra

Jacqueline Saphra is a T.S. Eliot Prize nominated, award-winning poet, and a playwright, editor, agitator, teacher and organiser. She is the author of ten stage plays, four chapbooks and five collections. Her recent collection Velvel’s Violin (Nine Arches Press, 2023) received a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.

Ilya Kaminsky

Ilya Kaminsky’s poems have been translated into over twenty languages. His prizes and awards include The Los Angeles Times Book Award, The National Jewish Book Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award, the Academy of American Poets’ Fellowship and an NEA Fellowship.
