In a conversation chaired by Dave Rich, three leading writers reflect on Jewish life in the shadow of 7 October and the Gaza war. Drawing on their essays for The Jewish Quarterly, Adam Kirsch examines the new hostility to Zionism and argues for its political – not merely defensive – case; Tanya Gold explores how Holocaust memory is being cheapened and distorted in popular culture; and Sir Simon Schama, one of the world’s foremost historians, considers the long, fraught history of antisemitism and the new forms it has taken. Together they address what it means to live, think and speak as Jews in a profoundly altered world.

Adam Kirsch

Adam Kirsch is the author of several books of poetry and criticism. A 2016 Guggenheim Fellow, Kirsch is an editor at the Wall Street Journal’s Weekend Review section and has written for publications including The New Yorker and Tablet. He lives in New York. Image © Remy Kirsch
