A New York Times Book of the Year upon its release in 2000, One Palestine, Complete was hailed by John Simpson as “by far the best history of the mandate”. Now, a quarter-century later, Haaretz columnist and David Ben-Gurion biographer Tom Segev returns to Jewish Book Week with a newly updated edition of this landmark work; in conversation with author and The Economist’s Israel Correspondent, Anshel Pfeffer.

Segev explores the British rule of Palestine from 1917 to 1948, a period of boundless potential and tragic missteps during which the Jewish population grew tenfold. Replacing 500 years of Turkish control, Britain’s promise to both Arabs and Jews that they would inherit the land set in motion the conflict that haunts the region to this day.

An event from Jewish Book Week 2025.
