The Freudenheim Translation Prize – the most ambitious award in the Jewish Literary Foundation’s 75-year history – celebrates outstanding fiction and non-fiction in English translation. Following its inaugural year, judges Boyd Tonkin, Rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand and Hephzibah Anderson join TLS fiction editor Toby Lichtig to discuss the art of translation and its vital role in carrying stories, ideas and cultures across languages and borders.

Hephzibah Anderson is Fiction Editor of the Mail on Sunday and a columnist for The Critic. She regularly writes for The Observer, Prospect magazine and BBC Culture.

Peter Filkins

Peter Filkins is the translator of H.G. Adler’s trio of Holocaust novels and the author of Adler’s authorized biography, H.G. Adler: A Life in Many Worlds. He teaches at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.

Boyd Tonkin

Toby Lichtig is the Fiction and Politics Editor of the Times Literary Supplement. He writes for a range of publications and has appeared as a guest critic on various television and radio programmes. He also freelances as a documentary producer. Toby was chair of judges of the 2018 JQ/Wingate Prize and of the EBRD Literature Prize 2020-23.
