Journalist, editor and writer awarded the Royal Society of Literature’s Benson Medal in 2020 for outstanding service. He writes on books and arts for international media including FT, Guardian and TLS. Former Literary Editor of The Independent, he chaired the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, is a trustee of the Orwell Foundation, and wrote The 100 Best Novels in Translation.
