We are delighted to invite children to enter our free poetry competition on the theme of ‘Adventure‘.
Adventure can be real or imaginary, at home or away, with friends, with family, or alone. You could write about an adventure you’ve had, one you’re planning on, one that you like to dream about or one that someone else went on. We’re looking for poems that reflect your originality and creativity, however you interpret the word ‘Adventure’.
Poems can be any length, up to 200 words.
Twelve poems will be selected as finalists, with their poems published in a pamphlet and an opportunity to perform on stage at Jewish Book Week 2027. A runner-up and a winner will also receive book tokens and a certificate.
This is a competition for children who live, or go to school, in the UK and are aged 5 to 11 years old. Because this competition is for under-18s, your poem must be submitted by a responsible adult such as a teacher or parent.
Applications are open until midday on Friday 18 December 2026.
Keren David is the Managing Editor of the Jewish Chronicle and the award-winning author of 14 books for children and young adults, most recently Miriam’s Voice, published by Hachette. She has been shortlisted for The Bookseller’s YA Book Prize, the UKLA award and the Branford Boase Award, and nominated five times for the Carnegie Prize.
Keren started out in journalism as a teenage messenger, she trained as a reporter, and then later worked for many national papers before moving to Amsterdam with her family where she studied art history, learned to cycle and failed to learn Dutch.
In 2007 she returned to London, and took a creative writing evening class at City University. Her first book, the award-winning When I Was Joe started out as a plot-planning exercise on the course.
