The Rise Domb/Porjes Prize for Hebrew-English Translation

 Terms & Conditions

The Risa Domb/Porjes Prize is awarded triennially to the best English translation of a full-length Hebrew book, fiction or non-fiction, of general interest and literary merit.

  1. Eligibility
  • The translation must have been first published in English between January 2022 and December 2024.
  • Only complete works of fiction or non-fiction are eligible; technical, scientific, and reference works are excluded.
  • Self-published translations are not eligible.
  • The translator must have obtained the necessary rights to translate and publish the work.
  1. Submission Process
  • Submissions must be made by the translator or the publisher.
  • An official entry form must be completed and submitted by the specified deadline.
  • A copy of the original Hebrew text and the English translation must accompany the submission.
  • All materials submitted become the property of the Jewish Literary Foundation.
  1. Judging Criteria Submissions will be evaluated based on:
  • Faithfulness to the original text
  • Literary quality of the translation
  • Clarity and readability in English
  • Overall contribution to the appreciation of Hebrew literature
  1. Prize Details
  • The winner will receive a monetary award of £2,000.
  • The prize will be presented at a ceremony organised by the Jewish Literary Foundation in partnership with the Society of Authors in February 2026.
  1. Copyright and Publicity
  • By accepting the prize, the winner agrees to participate in reasonable publicity activities related to the award.
  • The Jewish Literary Foundation reserves the right to use the winner’s name and details of the translation for promotional purposes.
  1. General Conditions
  • The Jewish Literary Foundation reserves the right to disqualify any submission that does not meet the eligibility criteria.
  • The decision of the judging panel is final and binding.
  • These terms and conditions are subject to change without prior notice.
  1. Eligibility Restrictions
  • Employees, trustees, and contractors of the Jewish Literary Foundation, as well as their immediate family members (spouse, partner, parent, child, or sibling), are not eligible to enter or receive either prize.
